Meanwhile, marine heatwaves and pollution are taking their toll on kelp forests that lie off the coast of South and Western Australia.
These are the findings of two separate studies of kelp forests, published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Kelp forests are the biological engine that powers the temperate — or cooler water — reefs. They have enormous economic as well as ecological value, contributing in the order of $10 billion a year to the Australian economy.
